Crastina is a platform for the exchange of experience, knowledge and inspiration regarding both scientific peer-to-peer communication and science dissemination.

The name comes from Scientia Crastina, Latin for ‘The Science of Tomorrow’

  • What? An international network of (mostly young) people who love to communicate science & tech.
  • Why? We think science needs to be communicated with more passion and professionalism.
  • Where? On our website with interviews & resources + on social media + on Skype and IRL.
  • Who? A content group (the Crew), a think tank (the Academy), + lots of friends & contacts.
  • When? Right now – feel free to join the party!

The main target group of the web site is science students and scientists in their early career. However, all students, scholars, professionals and laymen who are interested in scientific communication and science communication are welcome to contribute.

The basic scope of Crastina is very simple: we are interested in everything belonging to the intersection of the two concepts “Science” and “Communication” – see below.

Basically, Crastina is about three things:

  • Disseminating skills and mindsets from professional domains specialising in communication – journalism, PR, advertising, drama, video, tv & film, music etc. – and demonstrating how they can be used in both scientific peer-to-peer communication and science dissemination.
  • Bringing together people who are passionate about communication related to science & tech and who wants to increase their own skills, widen their knowledge, and develop the field together with their peers.
  • Inject more personal and emotional engagement into the area.scientia crastina

The daily business of Crastina is run by a project leader together with The Crastina Crew. A think tank – The Crastina Academy – is currently being developed.

CRASTINA’S VISION

An academical communication culture which:

  1. acknowledges the value of personal engagement and emotional impact
  2. is actively seeking out the professional methods and techniques of communication of other domains, such as the industry, media, advertising and PR.

MISSION STATEMENT

By the use of a website (including a blog feed), a Facebook page, a Twitter feed and live events bring together people with a passion for science communication to share and disseminate skills, experience, knowledge, opinion and ideas.

DEFINING TWO TYPES OF COMMUNICATION

We define:

  • scientific communication as the professional communication between scientists
  • science dissemination as the communication of scientific topics to all (normally associated with the hashtag #scicomm).

In addition, we define science communicators as people who communicate science inside science and out.

INITIATIVE FROM COMMUNICATION CONSULTANT, DEVELOPED BY YOUNG SCIENTISTS

The blueprint to the Crastina concept was created by Olle Bergman, a freelance writer and lecturer from Sweden.
