An Eight-Year Old Science Podcaster Explains How to Start Your Own Podcast

scireach blogHi, I’m Nate, the host of a podcast called The Show About Science. I’m here to tell you to not be afraid to try something new! Like a podcast. When I started the show I had no idea how many people it would reach. I just wanted to share my passion for science with other people. But it started growing and growing and growing. Now, 3 years later, I’ve created over 60 episodes. So I’m very excited to talk about two things I’m passionate about!! Podcasting and Science.

I was born to podcast. And I loved science from an early age! So when I was 5 years old, I decided to start my own science podcast. I was in kindergarten, so I couldn’t read or write yet. I did my research by watching YouTube channels like It’s Okay To Be Smart, TED-ED, and the Amoeba Sisters. And I used speech to text technology to help me search for videos. That research helped me come up with lots and lots of questions.

Now I’m 8 years old and on a mission to share what I’ve learned. And the biggest thing I’ve learned is that people can do anything they want as long as they put their mind to it and don’t let anything stand in their way.

The Show About Science is a podcast for kids and adults. For kids, it helps their minds grow with facts, while also being kind of funny. I interview scientists and other experts to learn more about topics I love. For me, podcasting changed the way I saw the world for the better. I realized that on my show, I could give amazing breakthroughs and dangerous topics the attention they deserved. But most importantly, podcasting is fun – especially getting to meet and interview all sorts of really interesting people. And then sharing the details of what I learn with my listeners.

If you’re interested in podcasting, the easiest way to start is with an app called Spreaker Studio. You can install the app on your computer or mobile device. There’s a free plan which lets you record episodes that are 15 minutes or less and provides 5 hours of hosting for your show.

Soundcloud also has a plan that lets you host 2 hours of audio for free. Both Soundcloud and Spreaker let you submit your show to Apple Podcasts.

We use an Electrovoice RE20 microphone for The Show About Science and record our interviews using Google Voice and a program called Adobe Audition. We’ve also recorded some interviews with FaceTime and a service called Zencaster. You’ll also want a good pair of headphones and a computer to record your podcast.

For on location interviews, we use an Audiotechnica 8035 shotgun microphone, a Tascam DR40 audio recorder and I wear a Sennheiser G3 wireless microphone. Don’t forget to wear your headphones to make sure you’re getting good audio. My dad does this part for me.

You can listen to every episode of The Show About Science on the Pinna app. The most recent episodes are available for free in Apple Podcasts or Soundcloud and you can follow me on twitter – I’m @natepodcasts. The Show About Science is also on Facebook so like our page there too.

Now get out there and try something new! If I can do it, so can you.
