COMMUNICATING SCIENCE THROUGH SHORT FILMS
Science can appear inaccessible and complex to non-scientists and art can seem unachievable and daunting to scientists. This 3 day course aims to bring together scientists and artists to create films that communicate complex concepts in science.
IN GROUPS OF 4, PARTICIPANTS WILL:
> find a scientific concept
> decide how they want to communicate this concept
> produce a short film aimed at a non-scientist audience
The short films are created with the aim of communicating fascinating scientific concepts and engaging members of the public with science. On the last evening of the event the films will be presented to a panel of judges who will award a prize to the film that best fulfills the aims of the hackathon. There will also be a free public showing of the films.

On each day of the event we will have mentors that are experts in various fields. They will be available for consultation about ideas and methods. Mentors will also give short presentations about their experiences communicating science and making films.

The BioScience Network Lausanne (BSNL) is a non-profit association comprising PhD students and Post-Doctoral Fellows working in the fields of Biology, Life Sciences and Biotechnology in the Lausanne area. The association is an independent body managed and run by members from UNIL and EPFL, with the support of faculties from both the Universities, aiming to promote career development of Life Sciences students.
The Catalyst is a group of scientific researchers using entertainment as a means of engagement with the public. We believe combining science and theatrical arts is valuable in a variety of ways:
- Improvisational skills enable scientists to present their work in an engaging and productive manner, both to communicate new research and to illuminate the process of scientific reasoning for the general public.
- Creating new media about current scientific research allows us to bring forth novel science-related narratives and authentic characters from the scientific culture.
